Kaisantunneli

KLUUVI, HELSINKI

The Kaisantunneli tunnel was built to facilitate bicycle and pedestrian traffic in downtown Helsinki. The ceiling of the tunnel is decorated with aluminum slats by Purso. If the slats were placed end-to-end, their total length would be 15 kilometers, says Key Account Manager Markku Nieminen.

The route from Kaisaniemi park to Kansalaistori plaza is the main bicycle thoroughfare in downtown Helsinki. The tunnel was opened on Saturday, May 4th 2024.

Travelers through the Kaisantunneli tunnel pass under aluminum slat decorations by Purso.

Achieving a durable and beautiful ceiling

U-shaped slats were needed for the site, which was designed by WSP Finland. To prepare for possible vandalism, the chosen slats were thicker than usual. A suitable solution was achieved by customizing the NAPSU system, says Nieminen.

The slat is 10 mm wide and powder coated in the pure white tone RAL 9010. The lightly colored painted slats reflect light to create a stylishly open impression in the space.

Aluminum is the best choice of material thanks to its durability. Many technologies and light fixtures have been combined with the slats in Kaisantunneli tunnel.

Purso references at the mouth of the tunnel

Beginning in Kaisaniemi park, the Kaisantunneli tunnel entrance is next to the Scandic Grand Central hotel. The facade of the hotel features frameless window profiles customized from Purso ECO products, which have been brought to the same level as the concrete.

The tunnel ends at Kansalaistori plaza, where one can admire the facade of the KPMG building on Töölönlahdenkatu street.
