SNEP® Luminaires Set the Mood at Redi Food Port

The sculptural ceiling at Redi Food Port is a living work of light art. Located in a shopping center, the ceiling of the food court is illuminated by black-framed SNEP® MODE CR line lights. Their Tunable White feature makes it possible to adjust the color temperature according to the time of day.

A Unique and Visually Impressive Wavy Ceiling

Kohina design team lead, Project Manager Johanna Barner says that the idea for the massive Redi Food Port ceiling came from the marine world:

– The name of the shopping center, Redi, means a harbor or anchorage, so we wanted to incorporate marine symbolism into the food court as well. The ceiling solution was ultimately implemented using wavy lamellar aluminium plates.

The chosen luminaries would generate good overall lighting coverage, shining from between the lamellar plates. It was also important for the luminaries to be in the correct lighting category. Adjustability was also considered essential. The Purso SNEP® MODE CR line lights had all these features and many more besides.

The low height of the space and many ceiling beams present there posed challenges for interior and lighting design. The technical solution was however successfully implemented in a way that hid the ceiling beams. The light sources themselves are also practically invisible. The black line lights are even and continuous, letting the light take center stage instead of the light fixture.

The lively look of the ceiling is accomplished by a combination of the lamellar plates and the luminaires: the waves were made to stand out by fixture placement and spacing and by using specific illuminances and color tones, Barner says.

Tunable White – Set the Mood with Color Temperature Adjustments

Barner says that Kohina’s vision was to create a living work of art on the ceiling, changing with the time by means of adjustable lighting. The lighting at the site is divided into Dali-controlled areas.

The Tunable White feature of the line light makes it possible to adjust the color temperature according to programming: for example, the color tone is warmer in the morning than at lunchtime, and the tone changes again as evening approaches. The changing illumination improves alertness and creates changing moods.

Environment First

Kohina designed the project with responsibility in mind, as the client has been awarded the LEED Platinum environmental certificate. A specific responsibility report and carbon footprint calculation were included in the project.

SNEP® lights are made in Finland and a responsible choice. The Purso light fixtures are made of recycled aluminium, have a long service life, and their carbon footprint can be calculated in the SNEP® product selector.
